IPA Keyboard: IPA Alphabet App Reviews

almost good but

Most of the IPA are covered but some letters and diacritics of Extensions to the IPA dont exist, such as ʩ. Please support them!

Exactly what I needed on the go

I’ve never thought that I’d enjoy transcribing on the iPhone. I always used my laptop for that. This app solved the inconvenience.

Very good;)

I have been waiting for such an app fir ages! It is brilliant! But please fix some bugs: sometimes ,when I switch the signs above one letter, the keyboard automatically switches to my usual keyboard.. And also in French transcription these signs are very needed : -, ´.please add! But anyway thanks so much!))

Nice app. a couple of glitches.

This keyboard makes it fairly easy to access the symbols of the international phonetic alphabet. It does have a tendency to close and switch back to the standard iOS keyboard. Also, the voiced velar plosive does not always show the correct symbol; it often reverts to the typewriter version of the "g" rather than the one shown here. It seems that it needs to not necessarily default to the one provided by the font.

Awesome!

Im really liking this app. Initially, I had some trouble with one of the symbols, but the designer was extraordinary helpful and I have no reservation in recommending this app for anyone. It has saved me so much time with transcription. Im s speech and hearing science student, so an accurate app for transcription is invaluable. Here it is.

Excellent!

This keyboard is perfect. It works just like I thought it would. I study French linguistics, so I was a little worried that it might not be able to do nasal vowels, but it can! It has a page of diacritics that you can add to the symbols!

Not intuitive

The app seriously suffers from lumping together phonemes that are not related, by following a English speakers intuition of where things are supposed to be, such as having to hold down the letter <t> to find θ just because in english it is spelled as <th>, yet ð is filed in <d> because of how it looks...this is ridiculous. My advice to the dev(s) behind this app is to pair only the voiced and unvoiced consonants and organize them into the shape of the official IPA chart (bilabials first, followed by labio-dentals, etc) and to separate the vowels and organize them into the IPA vowel trapezoid. I would refer the dev(s) to the OSX app IPApalette as an example of how to lay things out. If the dev(s) reorganize things so that it is actually intuitive to a linguist, then the app will be worth quite a lot, but currently it is a pain to use, and it is still unfortunately easier to use X-sampa over it.

Needs Work

This is the only keyboard that I have found that is ok for IPA characters. It works but its not a standalone keyboard. When inputting text I have to switch between the iOS keyboard and this one. Theres a lot of potential with this keyboard and hopefully well see some improvements soon.

Buyers beware. So you were warned!!!

Hex

Waste of time and money!

Great!

Add in your keyboard. Just have to know what to do--hold down the letter your you are looking for and you are given all of the options.

Works wonderfully, base layout odd

I dont know what this other guy is complaining out. Grouping /θ/ under /t/ and /ð/ under /d/ is intuitive and mirrors how the SIL keyboard for Mac does it. Its not because /θ/ is spelled <th> in English or because /ð/ "looks like a d," its intuitive because /t/ and /θ/ are both voiceless alveolar consonants differing in manner of articulation while /d/ and /ð/ are voiced alveolar consonants differing in manner of articulation. My complain is that its hard to type non-IPA on this keyboard. It would be great if it were laid out like a regular keyboard, so I dont keep hitting "m" when I mean "n" etc.

a small problem

this keyboard is amazing and all, but theres only one thing that bothers me. each time you open the keyboard up, itll rise up slowly, eventually covering the whole screen. please fix this, otherwise its a good keyboard

Waste of money, cannot enable sound for alphabet

Not worth losing money.

waste of money

Many of the symbols are too tiny and can’t be made larger. I was not able to recreate IPA flashcards on quizlet using this keyboard because many symbols that should be the size of letters were a tenth of the size.

Let me down the moment I used it

It’s missing way too many symbols for it to be useful for IPA. The first sounds I looked for weren’t there.

Awesome but weird keyboard layout & missing symbols

Just why? Are the keys SO big? And you're also missing some symbols.

I like this app. But ...

I can’t use apostrophe on top of the letter. Apple keyboard has the feature. For example, `i’. I can type `ì’ or `í’. But in this app, for `æ’, I can only type `æ`’ or `æ’’ like `i`’ or `i’’. Please enable this features in your app.

No Keyboard

Cannot add the third party keyboard making this useless.

Works well, good layout, no technical problems

Doesn’t work very well as an everyday keyboard—the layout’s just too awkward—but it’s extremely convenient and works well any time I need to use IPA. Most of the character positions are quite logical to me and are usually in the first or second place I look. (I don’t use it frequently enough to have them all memorized.) I also have never experienced crashes or technical problems with it, which is very nice. Definitely recommended from me!

Crashes when swiping

Newest iOS system. The keyboard crashes each time I attempt to swipe to reach a character like the velar nasal or uvular nasal. If I only need to swipe across one character, like to get the velar nasal, there is a chance it could output it after briefly crashing and resuming. But if the character is any further, it looks like the keyboard would just instantly crash, switch back to the system default keyboard, and output nothing. Could this maybe be fixed soon?

Great!

Completely great! Works flawlessly. A go to app when I need to write some IPA enscriptions.

Unusable

I just bought this as it would have been really handy for my job. But while long-pressing on keys does show an array of symbols associated with them, sliding across the array causes it to disappear and nothing is typed. Very frustrating, and a waste of money

Neat solution for whoever needs to write IPA symbols

Nothing fancy, but it does what it says it does. Super useful especially if you instruct phonetics or related disciplines, and use your iPad to make, let's say, a ppt material. Has no problem with inputting IPA symbols in a way that, at least for me, is consistent with my intuition. Also has a friendly customer service.

Great app and customer service!

I needed to find an app that could allow me to text the IPA alphabet to my classmates. I ran into an issue on my end (nothing to do with the app working, but rather my personal tech challenges) and I received immediate customer support. I am very impressed with the app and the customer service was a great bonus. I think our entire class has this app now- we love it. Thanks!

Missing labiodental tap

This app is very good - it does just what it advertises. It could use a little polishing in terms of aesthetics, but functionally it works just about perfectly. My only complaint is that instead of a labiodental tap, the app displays a question mark in a box, and when you try to type it, it just displays a box. It looks like it's not recognizing the symbol. Fix this, and the app will be 5 stars.
